Treating & Managing Canker Sores

Woman showing teethCanker sores are small, red, sores that occur on the tissues in the mouth, such as the gums, tongue, lips, and the inside of the cheeks. It’s been found by the American Association of Pediatric Dentistry that around 1 in 5 children suffers from frequent canker sores, which can cause pain and discomfort. Rest assured that canker sores are not contagious, but they do tend to run in families.

  • Vitamin B, iron, or folic acid deficiencies
  • Injury to the mouth that breaks the skin
  • Stress or emotional duress
  • Brushing the teeth too vigorously

Treating & Avoiding Canker Sores

Canker sores can’t be cured, but there are ways to avoid them and alleviate the pain and discomfort they cause. Below are a few of these options:

  • Brush or make sure your child brushes gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Avoid foods you may have allergies or sensitivities to
  • Avoid mouthwash or toothpaste that contains SLS
  • Avoid foods that can be too salty, spicy, or acidic
  • If a canker sore does appear, mix a teaspoon of baking soda into a glass of water and swish this mixture around your mouth a few times a day
  • To help ease the discomfort of a canker sore, use over-the-counter medications such as Orajel, Benzocaine, and Camphor.
