If you’ve never heard of one before, a frenectomy is an oral surgical procedure, during which a frenum in the mouth is surgically removed with a laser. A frenum is the attachment between any two tissues in your mouth, including on the gums, lips, and cheeks. There are two types of frenum, known as the labial frenum and the lingual frenum.
Your labial frenum is the tissue connecting the upper gums to the upper lip. If the labial frenum goes down too far on the gum tissue, it can result in a large gap between the two front teeth. This gap can cause many self-esteem and confidence issues in teens and young adults. If the labial frenum is too tight, it can cause gum recession, which can cause pain and discomfort.
Your lingual frenum is the tissue connecting the bottom of your tongue to the floor of your mouth. If the lingual frenum is too far forward on your tongue, it can restrict movement of the tongue, resulting in difficulties eating and speaking properly. This condition is also known as being “tongue tied.”
