What Is Laser Dentistry?

Laser dentistry uses focused light energy to perform various dental procedures with accuracy and minimal invasiveness. This technology is applied in soft-tissue treatments, periodontal care, cavity removal, and even cosmetic enhancements.

Our Fotona LightWalker® system, which utilizes dual-wavelength Er:YAG and Nd:YAG lasers, is among the most advanced dental tools available today. It provides unparalleled precision while promoting faster healing and improved comfort.

Patients increasingly prefer laser dentistry for its many advantages over traditional methods. Key benefits include:

  • Minimally Invasive: Procedures involve less pain, bleeding, and swelling.
  • Enhanced Precision: Targets only the affected area, preserving healthy tissue.
  • Faster Recovery: Reduces post-procedure discomfort and speeds up healing.
  • Versatile Applications: Suitable for various treatments, from gum disease therapy to cavity removal.

Our Castle Rock dentist leverages these benefits to provide a seamless and comfortable dentistry experience for all patients.

  • Gum Disease Treatment
Lasers effectively remove bacteria and infected tissue in periodontal pockets. This approach minimizes discomfort and promotes healthy gum regeneration.
  • Cavity Removal
The LightWalker® laser gently removes decayed material while preserving healthy tooth structure. It also disinfects the tooth, creating an ideal surface for fillings or restorations.
  • Soft Tissue Surgery
Procedures like frenectomies, gingivectomies, and biopsies are performed with precision and minimal bleeding, often without the need for stitches.
  • Root Canal Therapy
The Fotona SWEEPS® laser system enhances root canal procedures by thoroughly disinfecting and debriding root canal systems, even in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Cosmetic Dentistry
Laser contouring can improve the appearance of the gums and enhance the symmetry of your smile.
  • Pain Management and Healing
Photobiomodulation therapy, also known as PBM therapy, uses low-level laser light to reduce pain and inflammation, speeding up recovery from procedures and injuries.

High-Performance Conservative Dentistry, Without Compromises

Fotona LightWalker's state-of-the-art design, engineering, and patented technologies have made it the world's fastest-cutting Erbium laser, outperforming even rotary burs in terms of speed and precision.

LightWalker's patented QSP (quantum square pulse) mode represents an important technological advancement, improving the laser interaction with enamel (the hardest biologic tissue) and dentin. QSP mode technology leads the industry in efficiency and effectiveness in removing dental caries while leaving healthy tooth structure intact. The Er:YAG laser disinfects the healthy dentin and enamel. The laser-treated tooth surface provides a superior bonding surface for ideal restorative dentistry, all while optimizing patent comfort. Most patients can have routine restorative dental work completed without anesthesia. This is conservative dentistry at the highest level.

Photobiomodulation (PBM Therapy), previously known as Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), is light therapy that improves tissue repair, reduces pain and inflammation wherever the laser beam is applied. Usually applied by the doctor or hygienist, treatments take about 10 minutes and should be used two or more times a week.

PBM has been used for many years on sports injuries, arthritic joints, neuropathic pain syndromes, back and neck pain. Over 700 randomized clinical trials have been published on PBM, half of which are on pain.

Photobiomodulation can be used to improve healing of intra-oral and extra-oral tissues, reduce pain and inflammation of the TMJ or head and neck muscles and provide relief from a variety of oral lesions. Research continues to be published on the wide variety of clinical applications of photobiomodulation.

Fast, Effective, and Minimally Invasive Treatment with Laser Technologies.

Fotona’s SWEEPS® (Shock Wave Enhanced Emission Photo-acoustic Streaming) endodontic laser treatment successfully addresses a major disadvantage of classical chemo-mechanical treatment procedures: the inability to completely clean, debride and disinfect root canal systems.

SWEEPS® Er:YAG laser improves the irrigation and disinfecting efficacy of laser endodontics. By using synchronized pairs of ultra-short pulses, an accelerated collapse of laser-induced bubbles is achieved, leading to enhanced shockwave emission even inside the narrowest root canals improving the cleaning and decontamination of canal surfaces despite complex canal anatomy.

The powerful SWEEPS® technologies in Fotona dental lasers represent a unique and highly effective solution for modern endodontics.

Fotona’s LightWalker® dual-wavelength Er:YAG and Nd:YAG dental lasers are the perfect tools for performing the widest variety of laser-assisted periodontal procedures in a minimally invasive, cost-effective, simple, and highly effective manner

For treating periodontal disease, Fotona’s TwinLight® Periodontal Treatment (TPT) is a comprehensive and minimally invasive periodontal therapy incorporating the power of dentistry’s two most effective laser wavelengths: Er:YAG and Nd:YAG. The TwinLight® approach enables wavelength-optimized treatments for periodontal therapy (such as WPT™), which create the optimal conditions for healing periodontal tissues. What’s more, TPT prevents infection and promotes a reduction in pocket depths.

The TwinLight® procedure is performed in three simple steps:

  • Step 1: The Nd:YAG laser removes the diseased epithelial lining of the periodontal pocket and improves access to the root surface.
  • Step 2: The Er:YAG laser is used to thoroughly remove microbial biofilm and calculus from the root surface.
  • Step 3: The Nd:YAG laser energy is used to coagulate and promote the formation of a stable fibrin clot.

Optimal Wavelength Combination

Utilizing both Er:YAG and Nd:YAG laser wavelengths in a single treatment makes optimum use of the unique laser-tissue interaction characteristics of each wavelength. For example, Nd:YAG laser energy is superior for coagulation and deep disinfection, while Er:YAG is uniquely efficient at gently removing the infected surface tissue and calculus from the root surface. Combined, they can dramatically improve the outcome of laser-assisted treatments, guaranteeing maximum safety and efficacy.

The Fotona’s LightWalker® dual-wavelength Er:YAG and Nd:YAG laser system family has the following periodontal indications:

Nd:YAG laser:

  •  Laser-assisted new attachment procedure (cementum-mediated periodontal ligament new-attachment to the root surface in the absence of long junctional epithelium)
  • Periodontal regeneration – true regeneration of the attachment apparatus (new cementum, new periodontal ligament, and new alveolar bone) on a previously diseased root surface.
  •  Sulcular debridement or soft tissue curettage (removal of diseased or inflamed soft tissue in the periodontal pocket to improve clinical indices including gingival index, gingival bleeding index, probe depth, attachment loss, and tooth mobility)
  • Gingivectomy and gingivoplasty
  • Implant recovery

Er:YAG laser:

  • Sulcular debridement
  • Removal of subgingival calculi in periodontal pockets with periodontitis by closed or open curettage

Fotona's LightWalker® dual-wavelength is designed for virtually all soft-tissue surgical procedures

Fotona's dental lasers are ideal tools for all soft-tissue treatments like gingivectomy, biopsy, frenectomy, implant uncovering, hemostasis, and even surgical removal of teeth. Unlike conventional oral surgery techniques, dental lasers allow soft-tissue treatments often without the need for a scalpel or sutures. Soft tissue surgical procedures are precise, have minimal to no bleeding, and are usually pain-free.

Superior Performance

Fotona's low energy, high-frequency Nd:YAG pulse-width range is perfect for soft-tissue procedures as it allows for extremely fine ablation and more precise control over incisions. Laser cutting action can be adjusted from high-speed with minimal bleeding (100 µs) to light tissue interaction with instant coagulation or deep thermal disinfection (above 500 µs). In addition, the Er:YAG laser wavelength is also ideal for many soft-tissue treatments such as frenectomies, leukoplakia removal, and more.

With laser surgery, treatment times and post-operative healing periods are shorter. Using Fotona's LightWalker® dual-wavelength Er:YAG and Nd:YAG surgical incisions, socket debridement, coagulation, and photobiomodulation at the surgical site provides increased disinfection, decreased post-operative pain, minimal bleeding with fewer post-operative complications, and improved osteogenesis.

The high-precision Er:YAG laser on the LightWalker system is perfect for laser-enhanced implant applications. The Er:YAG laser does not interact with the dental implant allowing it to remove soft tissue next to the implant. This is beneficial when uncovering implants and when treating peri-implantitis, including the removal of granulomatous tissue from the inflamed surface, bone stimulation, and implant decontamination.

Fotona’s LightWalker® dual-wavelength Nightlase Therapeutic treatment is a non-invasive, patient-friendly laser treatment for increasing the quality of a patient’s sleep. NightLase reduces the effects of sleep apnea and decreases the amplitude of snoring by means of a gentle, laser-induced tightening effect caused by the contraction and formation of collagen in the oral mucosa tissue.

Simple, Safe, and Effective

Fotona’s patented Er:YAG laser modality optimizes the length of laser pulses, allowing for the safe penetration of heat into the oral mucosa tissue. It is gentle enough to be used on the sensitive tissue inside the mouth but strong enough to provide clinically efficacious heating.
