Thanks to better at-home care and in-office dental treatments, more people are keeping their teeth throughout their lives. Most of us have a good deal of control over our oral health care. However, despite at-home care some diseases and conditions can make dental disease and tooth loss unavoidable. As we age our ability to maintain proper home care changes for a variety of reasons. Various medications also decrease salivary flow creating a dry mouth which is more prone oral diseases. Also the geriatric patient often experiences a loss of dexterity, coordination, and change in diet. Whether it is the young 3 year old, teenager, adult or geriatric patient in a long term care facility we will customize a hygiene program that maintains a healthy smile for each patient.
The most common issue that you can treat at home is plaque build-up. Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria, bits of food and other organic matter that forms on your teeth. The bacteria in plaque make acids that cause cavities. Plaque also leads to periodontal (gum) disease. This can become a serious infection. It can damage bone and destroy the tissues around your teeth.
The best defense is to remove plaque before it has a chance to build up and cause problems is brushing and flossing. Brushing removes plaque from the large surfaces of the teeth and from just under the gums. Brushing alone can’t reach between every nook and cranny. Flossing between your teeth can remove plaque brushing can’t reach. You also can use other tools to keep your mouth and teeth clean.
