Dental Anxiety & How To Control It

Fearful woman with hands on mouth in dental chairHere at Meadows Family Dentistry, we understand that dental anxiety is very real and can cause many problems. We have patients who have avoided treatment of a toothache for so long that what may have been a simple cavity has turned into a severely infected tooth. Dental anxiety was the reason treatment was avoided, but the procedure will now be even more painful and costly (and more anxiety inducing) than it would have been if the patient had come in at the first sign of pain.

If you suffer from dental anxiety, you are not alone. In fact, between 30-40 million Americans report feeling fear and anxiety at the dentist’s office.

Controlling Your Dental Anxiety

Below are a few simple and easy ways to keep your anxiety under control while at our office:

  • Education – We believe that a fear of the unknown is a big source of anxiety at the dentist’s office. Knowing exactly what will happen at our office and exactly what your procedure will include can make your visit seem much less intimidating. We will do our best to explain your procedure to you as thoroughly as possible, but please let us know if you have any additional questions or concerns regarding your treatment or procedure.
  • Distraction – Many of our patients who experience dental anxiety have found success in distracting themselves during their procedure. You’re welcome to bring in a pair of headphones and listen to a podcast, audiobook, or your favorite soothing music while receiving treatment. This can often provide the distraction you need to calm your nerves.
  • Sedation – If all else fails or your anxiety is too intense, we can take advantage of sedation therapy options to keep you calm and relaxed during your treatment. Please let us know if this is a method you’d be interested in discussing with Dr. Preston Polson.

Here at Meadows Family Dentistry, your comfort and health are our top priority. We want to make sure your visit to our office is productive, educational, and puts you at ease.
