Common Reasons For Tooth Loss

2 happy couplesAccording to epidemiological studies, there are around 178 million adult Americans who are missing at least one tooth, and around 20 million adult Americans who are missing all of their teeth. There are plenty of causes of tooth loss, some natural and some accidental. However, there are ways to prevent tooth loss and avoid becoming one of those with missing teeth.

Causes of Tooth Loss

  • Severe Tooth Decay – If dental cavities or tooth decay are allowed to go untreated, they can damage the structure of the tooth. This makes it more likely that your tooth will break simply from biting or chewing food.
  • Gum Disease – Gum problems can lead to tooth loss. This is because the gums are part of the structure keeping your teeth in place. Severe gum disease can cause teeth to loosen and fall out.
  • Necessary Tooth Extractions – A tooth extraction is most commonly performed on a tooth that has become severely infected and cannot be saved by root canal therapy. In this situation, the tooth would be removed to prevent the infection from spreading.
  • Sports or Accidents – Contact sports, car accidents, accidental falls, or physical altercations can sometimes result in tooth loss.

Prevention of Tooth Loss

Below are a few of the ways that you can save your teeth from becoming lost:

  • Good oral hygiene – brushing your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily
  • Wear a mouth guard when playing contact sports or engaging in other dangerous activities
  • Avoid using tobacco products
  • Drink water frequently to help wash away harmful bacteria from the teeth and gums
  • Visit Dr. Polson at least twice a year for a dental cleaning and check-up
