Know the Warning Signs of Gum Disease

If you're not keeping an eye out for signs of gum disease, it may go unnoticed until it becomes more severe. Gum disease is a serious infection that affects the bones and tissues that support the teeth and may lead to tooth loss if you don't get it treated quickly.

The most common cause of gum disease is poor dental hygiene. If you neglect your oral health, plaque will begin to build up along the gum line, which will lead to gingivitis; the first stage of gum disease. Proper oral hygiene should include brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting Meadows Family Dentistry every six months for a dental cleaning and a checkup.

In the early stages of gum disease, you may notice the gum tissue becoming inflamed and even minimal bleeding when you brush your gums. Initially, even though the gums are irritated, they are still holding your teeth firmly in place in their sockets. At this point, any damage done can be reversed.

If gingivitis goes untreated, it can become more severe, leading to periodontitis. Once the disease has become more advanced, it will lead to loosening and even the loss of teeth.
