Why Brush Your Tongue?

You’re likely already aware of the importance of oral health and know that it is crucial to brush your teeth at least twice a day. However, most people tend to neglect a very important part of their mouths while thinking about oral hygiene: their tongue.

Importance of Brushing Your Tongue:

Your dentist may have been telling you to brush your teeth twice a day ever since you were a little kid, but they seldom talk about the tongue. Maybe it is because the tongue comes under the umbrella of brushing your teeth.

However, without being explicitly told about the importance of brushing their tongue, it is natural that many people don’t think of it as important as brushing their teeth.

If you only scrape your tongue before visiting the dentist, here are a few reasons you should change that habit today.

  • Brushing your tongue every time you brush your teeth can improve the smell of your breath. This is because the bad bacteria that cause the stinky smell in the mouth tend to accumulate on the tongue. By scraping them off, you will remove the layers of bacteria and get rid of any bad breath.
  • The bad bacteria on your tongue don’t just cause a foul smell but can also lead to various oral health issues, including cavities, gum infection, tooth decay, etc. Cleaning your tongue regularly can help prevent these issues and improve your overall oral health.
  • If there is a layer of bacteria on your tongue, it can cause the flavors from the food you consume to become muted. This means that you won’t be able to enjoy the taste of your food to the fullest. Cleaning your tongue exposes these taste buds to the food and helps you enjoy your food better.

Overall, there are no reasons that you should skip brushing your tongue. You can also get a tongue scraper that is specially designed to clean the tongue. However, if you find it hard to get your hands on a tongue scraper or just feel it is inconvenient to get an extra tool just for the tongue, a regular toothbrush does a fine job as well.
