Promoting Oral Health in Pregnancy

Time and time again, research has linked dental hygiene with overall health and well-being, proving that poor oral hygiene can serve as a contributing factor to chronic disorders like diabetes, cardiac issues, and cancer. It is even more vital to maintain oral health in pregnancy because constant hormonal fluctuations boost your risk of developing cavities and gum diseases which, if left unattended, can impact the development of your growing baby. Listed below are a few for maintaining and promoting oral health in pregnancy:

  • Schedule regular appointments with your dentist during and after your pregnancy. They will keep your dental health in constant check and identify symptoms of potential problems before they develop into full-fledged diseases. For instance, higher than normal progesterone and estrogen levels in the body can lead to plaque buildup, often associated with pyogenic granuloma – small benign tumors behind or between the teeth.
  • Make your dentist fully aware of the names and dosages of all medications and prenatal vitamins that have been prescribed to you by your obstetrician, including special precautions or instructions. Your dentist may need to alter your dental plan based on this information.
  • Pay extra attention to changes in your gums and teeth, as pregnancy enhances the risk of certain periodontal diseases, especially gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to bacteremia – a condition characterized by the presence of bacteria within the bloodstream. This is a serious condition that can seriously impact the fetus’s health. If you notice any tenderness, bleeding, or swelling within your gums, don’t wait for the condition to worsen and visit your dentist immediately.
  • Pregnant women often suffer from extended bouts of morning sickness, making vomiting a regular practice and exposing the teeth to higher than normal amounts of stomach acid. Acid can damage the enamel of your teeth, weaken their structural integrity and loosen them. If you are struggling with excess vomiting, inform your dentist, and they’ll prescribe special medications and supplements to prevent dental erosion.
