How Oral Health Impacts Overall Health

Did you know a synergic relationship is seen between your overall wellness and oral health? After all, gum diseases are linked to various other illnesses, including diabetes, respiratory disease, heart disease, osteoporosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

The Link Between Oral Health and Overall Health

Your body has many bacteria present; the same goes for your mouth. Most bacteria in your mouth are considered harmless. But since the mouth is an entrance point to the digestive and respiratory systems, some of these bacteria may end up causing diseases.

If you are regularly brushing your teeth and flossing, this will help keep the bacteria under control. However, if you do not ensure proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach new levels of oral infections, which can result in gum disease and tooth decay.

Some other conditions linked to oral health are:

Endocarditis

It is an infection in the inner lining of the valves or heart chambers that occurs due to the bacteria from the mouth entering the bloodstream and getting attached to different areas of your heart.

Problems in Pregnancy and Birthing

Periodontitis has been connected with premature birth and low weight at the time of delivery.

Cardiovascular Disease

Although the links have not been adequately made, research points to the fact that stroke and clogged arteries may be connected to infections and inflammation caused by oral bacteria.

Pneumonia

When certain bacteria in the mouth tend to reach the lungs, it can result in pneumonia.

Final Thoughts

We covered some health issues you can face due to bad oral health. Visit a dentist regularly, and ensure good dental care so that you do not face any oral health issues that can take a toll on your overall health.
