Here at Meadows Family Dentistry, we know that a lot of work goes into growing a healthy and beautiful smile. The best way for both parents and teenagers to help maintain a teen’s growing smile is to know the most common threats to a teenager’s teeth and how these potential problems can be avoided.
Threats to a Teen’s Dental Health
Below are the most common threats to your teen’s dental health:
Sports Injuries – Around 3 million teeth are knocked out every year because of youth sporting injuries. If your child participates in sports or other athletic activities (gymnastics, karate, etc.) we recommend that he or she wears a sports guard to prevent dental damage.
Smoking & Vaping – Tobacco is dangerous for your teen’s body as well as their teeth. The use of tobacco products has been linked to gum disease and various forms of cancer including lung cancer, throat cancer, and oral cancer. Unfortunately, the use of e-cigarettes and vaporizers is rising, and these are both terrible for your teen’s teeth. Make sure you talk to your teenager about tobacco and encourage him or her to stay away from it.
Dental Cavities – Dental cavities are the most common childhood disease, and that includes the teenage years as well. Decrease your teen’s likelihood of a cavity by making sure they are educated about their oral health. Make sure your teen knows to brush at least twice a day, floss daily, and visit the dentist every six months for a dental cleaning and a checkup. It’s also important to limit sugar intake and have a balanced diet.
If it’s time for your teen to visit the dentist, please don’t hesitate to make an appointment here at Meadows Family Dentistry. Our office is located in beautiful Castle Rock, Colorado.
