Avoid Passing On Your Fear Of The Dentist

Woman showing fear in dental chairIf you suffer from a crippling fear of the dentist, there’s a pretty good chance that you may unknowingly pass this fear onto your children. This is dangerous because routine dental checkups are important for everyone, but especially kids. This is because dental problems during childhood can lead to continued problems into adulthood.

It’s important that you make sure your children know that the dentist is there to help them, not to hurt them. Luckily, even if you do suffer from a fear of the dentist there are ways to prevent passing this fear on to your kids.

Avoid Passing On Your Fear Of The Dentist

  • Start Early – According to the American Dental Association, your children should visit the dentist either by their first birthday or the emergence of their first tooth. Making dental visits a routine while your child is still young will help prevent them from fearing the dentist as they get older.
  • Keep It Positive – When your child asks about the dentist, avoid using scary words such as “drill,” “shot,” or “hurt.” In fact, most kids won’t even assume it hurts until you say, “it won’t hurt.” Instead, try reading kids’ books about the dentist, or let them know that all their dentist wants to do is clean and count their teeth.
  • Let Us Know – Lastly, if your child is experiencing anxiety or stress about his or her dental appointment, please call us ahead of time and let us know. We’ll do all we can to help ease your child’s stress.

Here at Meadows Family Dental, it’s important to us that your child knows we’re here to help! We’re proud to offer a calm and welcoming environment for your family.
