5 BBQ Safety Tips For Summer

Man and BBQOne of the best parts of summer includes being outdoors with friends and family, and grilling up a delicious meal. However, there are risks you take every time you fire up that grill. To make sure your cookout is memorable for the fun times had by all, instead of the injuries sustained, you need to know the risks and how to avoid them.

Summer BBQ Safety Tips

Below are 5 BBQ dangers and how to avoid them:

  • Fire – Fire is the most obvious threat of outdoor BBQs. Every year smokers and grills cause thousands of fires, millions of dollar in damage, hundreds of injuries and dozens of deaths. You need to be responsible about fire safety, which means having a fire extinguisher within reach and someone watching the grill at all times.
  • Charcoal Safety – Charcoal grills are more dangerous than any other because of the use of lighter fluid. Always be sure to follow the instructions of lighting a charcoal grill, and don’t let it become a game.
  • Instruction Manual – Before ever operating a smoker or a grill, you should first read the instruction manual. The manuals are sold with the appliances, or can be found on the manufacturer’s website.
  • Location – Place your grill or smoker in a proper location. It shouldn’t be too close to a home, shed, garage, or patio, as it carries the possibility of setting fire to these structures. Refer to the instruction guide to find the clearance distance of your grill or smoker.
  • Grease – Avoid allowing grease to build up at the bottom of your grill. Otherwise it can flare up, causing burns or other injuries. Always be sure to clean your grill or smoker of any grease that may have accumulated.

Making sure to deal with each of the above situation will increase the likelihood of a safe and fun summer BBQ.
