Grinding/ Tooth Wear/ Night Guard

Mouth with Night GuardDo you grind your teeth? Do you have jaw joint pain?  You are not alone. Many people are afflicted with bruxism (teeth grinding) or Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD).  Some people maybe aware of their symptoms while others  unconsciously grind during the night while you are asleep. Grinding your teeth can damage enamel, wear down teeth, incur jaw pain, or irritate your gums. The least effect may simply be noise that can disturb your spouse's sleep if loud enough.  The worst effect may be constant pain in the jaw joint that affects your quality of life.  These symptoms can be periodic or occur daily.

If you grind your teeth or have jaw joint pain you should seriously consider an occlusal guard. The occlusal guard is very similar to a mouth guard worn by athletes. It provides a barrier between your top and bottom teeth while you sleep. Every occlusal guard is custom fitted and molded for your mouth. In 2 short visits we can improve your symptoms.  On the first appointment we take an impression of your teeth so the custom night guard can be created by a dental lab. Two weeks later the night guard is delivered. Occlusal guards are very durable and can be used for up to 10 years.

Night GuardOther things you can do to stop grinding

  • You can train your jaw to be free and easy rather than clenched.
  • Refrain from chewing gum or on other objects like pens.
  • Avoid alcoholic drinks and drinks with caffeine, as these can increase the likelihood you will grind your teeth.
  • Anti-inflammatory medications or muscle relaxants can also be prescribed to help alleviate symptoms.
  • Like other joints, physical therapy can have great results when combined with traditional TMD therapy.
