Revisiting Your Brushing Routine

Woman brushingBecause brushing our teeth is one of the first things we learn how to do ourselves, most of us feel like we probably have a pretty good grasp on what’s involved in the process. However, there’s a good chance that many of us haven’t given a second thought to our brushing technique since we were kids.

Brushing your teeth is one of the most important parts of your dental routine, so it’s vital that you continuously make sure you’re doing it correctly.

Brushing Tips

  • Update Your Equipment – According to the American Dental Association, you should get a new toothbrush every 6 months or when the bristles of your current brush begin to fray. When purchasing a new toothbrush, make sure the bristles are soft or medium in order to avoid damaging your gum tissue.
  • Brush Twice Daily – You should be brushing your teeth at least twice a day – once in the morning and once before going to bed. It’s also a good idea to brush after lunch as well, if you have the time. If not, try rinsing your mouth with water after lunch in order to help wash away any bacteria or harmful acids.
  • Fluoride Toothpaste – When brushing, make sure you’re using fluoride toothpaste that has been approved by the American Dental Association. This toothpaste has been shown to reduce the risk of dental cavities and tooth decay. Just be sure not to swallow the toothpaste!
  • Two Minutes a Time – If you’re spending any less than two minutes brushing your teeth, you may not be cleaning each tooth thoroughly. Try setting a timer on your phone or brushing during the length of a commercial break or an entire song.
