How Your Heart Health is Linked to Dental Disease

Mature coupleDental disease can harm more than just your oral health. If you allow dental diseases to go untreated, harmful bacteria can sometimes be released into the bloodstream. Once this occurs, rapid health decline will follow.

Gum Disease & Heart Disease

Gum disease, especially once it advances to periodontal disease, can have many negative effects on your overall health. In fact, gum disease and periodontitis have been shown to increase the risk of stroke and heart disease. Additionally, those suffering from gum disease may also be more likely to develop coronary artery disease.

Prevention Starts with Good Oral Hygiene Habits

It’s important to provide Dr. Polson with your complete medical history, including any prescription medications you may currently be taking. If you have a history of heart problems or an existing heart condition, please let Dr. Polson know. These existing conditions could require a consultation with your doctor before performing certain dental procedures.

The best ways to prevent dental disease from damaging your overall health include:

  • Brushing your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Make sure you’re brushing for at least two minutes.
  • Flossing every day. Flossing is the only way to clean between the teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach.
  • Visit Meadows Family Dental every 6 months for dental cleaning and exam. Use this time to discuss any concerns you may have about your oral health.

To make an appointment for your regular checkup, please call Meadows Family Dental today. Our office is located in Castle Rock, Colorado.
