How Diabetes Can Effect Your Oral Health

Diabetic testDiabetes is a disease on the rise, currently affecting around 30 million Americans. There are many diseases and disorders that accompany diabetes, including heart disease, stroke, and certain kidney disorders. However, it’s also been discovered that gingivitis (also known as gum disease), is an unfortunate side effect of diabetes, as well. In fact, diabetes sufferers are up to 3 to 4 times more likely to suffer from gingivitis.

How Diabetes Affects Oral Health

If you have diabetes, there are a few ways you can make sure your oral health doesn’t suffer because of it. The most important thing to do is make sure that you have your blood glucose levels under control. If your blood sugar is erratic, it’s more difficult for your body to fight off bacterial infections, including gum disease.

Those suffering from uncontrolled diabetes will have more plaque buildup than others. Plaque will lead to a wide variety of dental health problems, including gingivitis, which is caused by a buildup of plaque on the gum tissue.

Symptoms Of Gingivitis

  • Gums that bleed easier during flossing or eating
  • Painful gum tissue
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Chronic bad breath

If gingivitis goes untreated, it can turn into periodontitis, which is a more severe form of gum disease. Over time, periodontitis can even lead to the loss of your teeth.

If you suffer from diabetes, the best way to ensure good dental health is to maintain your blood glucose levels, and follow regular oral hygiene habits. This includes flossing and brushing every day and receiving regular dental cleanings and exams every 6 months. In addition, it’s important to make sure that Dr. Preston Polson is aware of your diabetes diagnosis and any medications you may be taking.
