Dental Problems and How They Can Contribute to Migraines

Head in HandsMigraines can be the result of some dental problems. Many dental patients who suffer from migraines or chronic headaches have discovered that fixing their dental problems can help reduce or even eliminate headaches! Here at Meadows Family Dentistry, we’re happy to help you discover if you have dental issues and if fixing those problems can help you eliminate chronic headaches.

Dental Treatment and Migraines

When you’re trying to find out if dental treatment can help you decrease migraines, it’s a good idea to start at the jaws for any signs of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ). If your jaws are misaligned, chronic pain can result and headaches can occur. The pain will only subside once the TMJ is controlled with treatment or dental therapy.

Below are a few things Dr. Preston Polson will look for when trying to find out if you suffer from TMJ:

  • Take X-rays of the face and jawbones
  • Abnormalities or anomalies in the muscles of the face
  • Check to see if your bite is aligned properly
  • Speaking to you to determine if your jaw sometimes locks up or if it makes popping or clicking noises when opening or closing the mouth

In addition to taking X-rays, Dr. Polson may use other procedures to determine whether or not having dental treatment can help with your migraines. These procedures include the use of CT scans and MRIs. Possible dental treatments to help with headaches include the use of corrective mouthpieces, orthodontics, or even oral reconstructive surgery.

If you suffer from migraines or chronic headaches and would like to make an appointment to see if getting dental treatment can help, please contact Meadows Family Dentistry. Our family dental office is located in Castle Rock, Colorado
